– Chelsea strengthened their grip on third after a hard-fought win over already relegated Norwich
– The Blues took advantage of Man United’s collapse against Southampton to take charge of the top four race
– The side now has a four-point advantage over United who sit fifth and Leicester City in fourth as the season enters the homestretch
Chelsea’s slim win over Norwich City on Tuesday night, July 14, was enough to strengthen their grip on third place.
Olivier Giroud’s powerful header from Christian Pulisic’s assist was all the Blues needed to increase their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
With Man City’s two-year ban from European football already lifted, other teams have been left with only two slots to fight for in the race for the top four.
City and Liverpool both look set to seal the second and first place respectively, leaving Man United, Chelsea, Leicester and others to battle for the two remaining places.
As such, the race for the top four will no doubt go down to the wire, with United keen to earn maximum points against Crystal Palace on Thursday, July 16, to increase their top four chances.
They will then take on struggling West Ham United before entertaining Leicester in their final league match in what could be a decider on who seals a place in Europe’s elite competition.
The Foxes, on the other hand will be out to make amends in their remaining matches among them an away clash against Tottenham who are also eyeing a European football slot.
