The Ministry of Education on Wednesday, July 15, cleared Chuka University to reopen on August 3, 2020, after it complied with laid out government health protocols.
The learning institution in Tharaka Nithi will be the first public university to resume studies after a four-month break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
University Education and Research Principal Secretary Simon Nabukwesi confirmed the university was at liberty to resume academic sessions during an inspection of the institution.
The principal secretary clarified that final year, PhD and Masters students will be the first to resume studies, as universities start reopening from the end of July.
“Once the finalist students have completed their studies, they will create space for those reporting in September,” he stated.
He added that the return strategy will also apply to other institutions which will comply with the government’s directive to re-open.
According to him, officers from the Education and Health ministries will physically inspect every university to ensure they do not expose learners and the other populations to the virus.
Universities are expected to have adequate supplies of face masks, sanitisers, and running water, as well as enough facilities to ensure social distancing.
Nabukwesi said universities were also required to submit a schedule for how learners will return in phases, should they be allowed to reopen.
He advised that the final year students be allowed to resume first, to allow them time to prepare for examinations to avoid interfering with their final academic year.
The PS challenged universities to embrace e-learning, noting that in some countries learning was not interrupted because when the pandemic struck, they switched to online learning.
Chuka University Vice-Chancellor Erastus Njoka said the institution was doing its best to meet the requirements for the reopening.
Njoka also said the university was producing alcohol-based sanitisers and liquid handwashing soap for use by the students and even the neighbouring community.
He said they had also procured thermo-guns to monitor the temperatures of university students and staff, as well as visitors.
