Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Tuesday, 3rd May as a public holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr.

In a gazette notice on Tuesday, 27th April Matiang’i declared 3rd May a public holiday in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” read the notice.

The festival of Idd-ul-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-breaking, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

The announcement comes after CS Matiang’i declared Friday, 29th April a public holiday to accord all Kenyans the opportunity to participate in the State Funeral Service of former President Mwai Kibaki at Nyayo Stadium.

The burial will take place at Othaya, Nyeri County the following day.

Tuesday public holiday will come after Kenyans enjoy another on Monday, 2nd May to mark Labour Day.

Labour Day, which is celebrated on 1st May, will fall on a Sunday, a non-working day thus being pushed to Monday.
