Daggers drawn in Webuye East politics – Weekly Citizen

The parliamentary race to succeed Webuye East MP Alfred Sambu has intensified with new camps emerging in readiness for 2022 political battle.
Alfred Sambu is serving his third term in parliament after winning three consecutivel general elections since 2007 when he trounced former minister Musikari Kombo.
However, Sambu’s political insiders aver that he is torn between grooming his clansman and shopping a candidate from Ngachi clan (dominant clan in Webuye East) to succeed him.
As the debate intensifies, several factors are likely to shape the succession politics given the fact that the constituency poverty level is alarming, and also ailing coffee sector, revival of Pan-Paper Mills now Rai Paper mills and woes facing cane farmers is set to play a central role during campaigns.
Already, seven have shown interest to battle it out in the political duel which pundits state will fierce.
The first on the block is Bungoma East Kenya National Union of Teacher’s executive secretary Aggrey Namisi who stays in Webuye West but also with roots in Webuye East. He has already kicked off his early campaigns in the region to popularise his candidature two years before general elections.

Voters argue that immediately he is trounced, he goes underground and resurrects in the last minutes at campaign time. Constituents feel scared to elect a leader with such character as it will be difficult to access him if elected given the fact that he has exhibited his political character to the residents.
Job Chelongo, now Bungoma county government deputy chief of staff has also shown interest in making his third stab in area parliamentary politics. He says that parties have been rigging him out during party primaries, adding that come 2022, he will make a wise choice on which party will sponsor him to parliament. A Webuye-based businessman a Mr Kisaka who owns motor vehicle garages in Webuye is said to be in the race. He is yet to come in public and declare his interest.
A contractor-cum-engineer, Chiuli is assembling his political arsenal to trounce his opponents come 2022. He has already hit the campaign trail, traversing the constituency. He has been seen on several occasions fundraising for churches, paying school fees for needy students, footing medical bills and has offered a courtesy van to help constituents.
He promises to use his connections with the locals to amass adequate votes that will enable him romp into parliament with ease in 2022.
Chiuli, has endeared himself to the residents by organising high profile fundraising meetings to aid poor students and women’s groups.
“I strongly believe voters stopped electing leaders along political party lines. In the developing world, people look at the candidate’s manifestos and go for the best,’’ he said
