– Achola who works as a shamba boy said all his siblings are not able to raise the fund yet their mother is a widow
– They are appealing for help to raise a total of KSh 10,000 for the test and the minor operation to insert the feeding tube
When Elly Otieno Achola’s mother fell ill in January 2020, he was hopeful she would recover after doctors treated her and released her to go back home.
What they did not know was that their 57-year-old mother had an undiagnosed condition that was making her weaker and weaker despite the treatment she was receiving.
When they first took her to hospital, Achola’s mother was diagnosed with ulcers and for two months doctors treated her without knowing she had another underlying issue.
He told TUKO.co.ke that it was not until her condition got worse when the doctors decided to carry out more tests to know what was ailing their mother.
Caroline Agolah Achola was first referred to Bonbo Hospital before she was referred to Russia Hospital in Kisumu where she was to undergo five tests.
Due to lack of funds, Achola and his siblings were able to raise fees for four tests only which were done at several hospitals including Agha Khan, Russia and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital.
The tests revealed their mother had stage III oesophagal cancer which is cancer that invades through the wall of the oesophagus and spreads to the lymph nodes invading adjacent structures.
This stage which may also be referred to as locally advanced according to Texas Oncology is a very common stage for the presentation of oesophagal cancer.

It was on this basis that doctors assured Achola his mother could be cured if treatment was started immediately- but that did not happen due to financial challenges.
Achola, who works as a shamba boy in Nairobi and his siblings are unable to raise the funds for their mother who is now growing weaker by the day since she’s unable to eat.
“The reports from the doctor’ who have been handling her show she can be treated if we act as immediately but now the problem is the means of treatment,” said Achola.
According to him, his mother needs to get the fifth test done, undergo minor surgery to insert a tube that will help her feed since she can not swallow food then start her chemotherapy sessions.
They need to raise KSh 10, 000 for both the test and the minor surgery as they plan on acquiring a National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) that will help her when she starts chemotherapy.
They will, however, be required to raise another KSh 7,000 for processing the NHIF and a year’s downpayment for them to start using the funds immediately.
“As an individual, I have tried all that I could including creating a WhatsApp group where friends helped me to raise the money we used in the different tests,” he said.
Achola and his siblings are now appealing to wellwishers to help them raise the funds so their mother can get the much-needed treatment before her condition deteriorates.
