Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed are the talk of town after they flew in a chartered luxurious Airbus A318 ACJ plane to visit ailing ODM leader Raila Odinga on Thursday, July 10.

Photos of the 19-seater aircraft’s inside view were shared by the duo on their social media pages sparking conversations on their public display of “opulence”.

The private jet used by the two ODM officials is owned by Constellation Aviation Services based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and costs approximately $12,500 (KSh 1.3 million) an hour to hire it.

The plane which is the smallest airliner in the Airbus A320 family boasts of a lounge area, a private office, a VIP dining and bedroom.

The 10-year-old plane landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday, July 8, from Lusaka, Zambia, at 11:23am and took off to Dubai at 12:45pm, NTV reported.

Joho and Mohamed spent over KSh 6.5 million to fly for about five hours to the UAE.

The A318 Elite was introduced by Airbus in November 10, 2005, and its aim was for the medium-range market for flights of up to 4,000-nautical-mile (7,400 km) range.

It has a choice of two cabin layouts seating up to 18 passengers and is powered by CFM engines.

Relative to other Airbus A320 family variants, it sold in only small numbers but has an excellent safety record with zero accidents as of 2018.

As of January 2019, Air France was the largest operator of the Airbus A318.
