Details of Power Sharing Deal Between OKA Principals

The One Kenya Alliance (OKA) has resolved to field a Presidential candidate ahead of the upcoming General Election, even as it engages other like-minded formations.

This is according to the draft coalition agreement that is yet to be signed by the OKA principals comprising Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, KANU’s Gideon Moi, NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua, and United Democratic Party’s Cyrus Jirongo.

In the secret deal, the coalition will also field a single candidate for each parliamentary, Gubernatorial, and county assembly seats across the country in the forthcoming polls.

Further, the alliance will undertake joint nominations in order to settle on its candidates, and avoid fallout that usually hit parties a few to the elections.

In areas considered to be OKA’s strongholds, they will field multiple candidates albeit after a thorough assessment is done to ensure that they don’t end up losing the seat in the General Election, which could stem from sibling rivalry that cost opposition leader Raila Odinga under the NASA coalition in 2017.

The draft coalition agreement indicates that should OKA Presidential candidate carry the day on August 9, its members shall form a coalition government.

The power-sharing deal will be based on four key pillars including founder member status, portfolio balance and equity, election performance and equity base. 

The positions to be shared by the founding parties will include executive appointments and parliamentary leadership.

“In the event that the coalition parties do not agree and or execute the power-sharing agreement before the end of March 2022, then this coalition Agreement shall stand terminated and dissolved,” read part of the draft coalition agreement. 

Further, the alliance’s logo will entail a volcano erupting with party colours at the top of the founding parties. 

As the days draw near to the General Election, time is running out for the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) to issue out their next move.

Recently, Kalonzo hinted that OKA was in talks with the Azimio la Umoja team in a bid to form an Azimio-OKA coalition. 

He, however, clarified that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga should back his Presidential bid according to the deal signed in 2017 as part of the NASA coalition.

“I am ready to work with Odinga but our 2017 NASA document that is legally binding must be a factor in the new negotiations. 

“Raila Odinga has an option of abiding by the terms of this binding agreement or has the option of choosing to act in utter defiance of the agreement and thereby compounding the trust deficit,” Kalonzo pointed out.
