Deputy President William Ruto has shocked many Kenyans after claiming a role in the fight for the new constitution.

Reacting to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s comments following the collapse of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), the second in command said his boss got it all wrong by initiating the drive to amend the 2010 supreme document.

He said the BBI was an evil scheme to negate the gains made by the new constitution that he allegedly fought for.

The DP claimed that for 30 years, he and other crusaders fought hard for Kenya to get a constitution that did not give the President too much powers.

“If there was a much more dangerous constitutional change, it was the BBI. It was going to roll back all the gains we had.

“We fought for almost 30 years against an imperial presidency. The BBI was going to install the imperial presidency in a very unprecedented way,” he claimed.

When?

Critics have ridiculed the DP for making a clear lie.

They demanded to know when is that time the country’s number two was involved in push for constitutional reforms.

At the age of 26, the Dr Ruto was already a member of the ruthless YK-92 group that late President Daniel Arap Moi used to intimidate and harass opponents and champions for constitutional changes.

The late Kenneth Matiba, the late Charles Rubia, Reverend Timothy Njoya, Siaya Senator James Orengo, and ODM leader Raila Odinga were among individuals who were brutally dealt with by YK-92 for opposing the dictatorial regime of Moi.

In 2005 when retired President Mwai Kibaki was rooting for a new constitution, Dr Ruto was in the list of top politicians who joined the ‘No’ camp to oppose the referendum, which failed terribly on the ballot.

Again in 2010, the Deputy President led the ‘No’ campaigns against the plebiscite. However, Kenyans passed the document.

Barely three years later, the DP because a beneficiary of the constitution he vehemently opposed after he was elected the second in command, with President Kenyatta being his boss.

So, when did he fight for any constitutional amendments? We leave to you to decide on that one.
