Former Dean of the Moi University’s School of Medicine, Prof Lukoye Atwoli, has been appointed as Dean of Medical College, Aga Khan university, East Africa. The announcement was made in a memo released by the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Prof.Carl Amirhein.
Dr. Atwoli resigned abruptly from his position at Moi university towards the end of last year, 2019, citing frustration from his colleagues and management.
In a letter released to his colleagues during that time, he said, “I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that today I handed in letters giving notice of my early retirement from the Office of Dean, School of Medicine, with immediate effect.”
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly. Events over the past 18 months have gradually convinced me that my position as Dean is no longer tenable,” added Prof Atwoli.
Until his appointment, he was an
associate Professor of Psychiatry, Moi University School of Medicine. According
to his Moi University Profile, “he is also a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Moi
Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and at the Academic Model Providing
Access to Healthcare (AMPATH). He is the head of Mental Health Services at the
Centre for Assault Recovery- Eldoret (CAR-E) (a specialized Centre for sexual
and gender-based violence)”.
“In addition, Dr Atwoli is a
Visiting Scientist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, and an
Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town’s Department of
Psychiatry and Mental Health. He is involved in research on Trauma and
Posttraumatic Syndromes, Students and Youth Mental Health, and Neuropsychiatric
Genetics”.
“Dr Atwoli is also a social and
health rights advocate and has influenced and participated in the development
of numerous policies and programmes in Kenya. He currently serves as the
Vice-President of the Kenya Medical Association and is the Secretary-General of
the African Association of Psychiatrists. Dr Atwoli is the Treasurer of the
African College of NeuroPsychopharmacology (AfCNP), and sits on the Kenyan
Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board as well on several advisory boards nationally
and internationally”.
He Holds a PhD from University of
Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa, a Master’s degree of Medicine in Psychiatry
from University of Nairobi, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
(MBChB) degree, Moi University School of Medicine
