East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament, Florence Jematia Sergon, has been taken into custody.
The lawmaker was picked up by the authorities over her incitement remarks made in a political rally.
Jematia, in her speech, had assured Baringo residents that she would find a way for them to acquire guns so that they aid the police in fighting bandits in the area.
“They (police officers) are properly safeguarded and even have helmets to protect themselves. We are tired of asking for protection,” Jematia had remarked during the meeting.
She was marched to Nairobi Police Station for grilling after netizens on various socials and leaders criticized her over the speech, saying that she was threatening security in the area marred by banditry attacks and the whole country at large.
“This is an EALA MP inviting citizens in Baringo to buy guns and ammunition. Hon. Jematia has stooped too low. I wish to caution leaders against seeking elective seats by making such reckless statements. Let’s work for peace,” West Pokot Senator and Leader of Majority in the Senate, Samuel Poghisio, told off the MP.
Baringo County Commissioner Abdirizak Jaldesa pointed out that two politicians who were present during the time that Jematia was making the flaming vocals were summoned to record a statement.
“The MP has gone underground after we summoned her to appear before the committee. We have sufficient evidence to charge her with incitement to violence,” Jeldesa stated.
This comes at a time when Kenya is on a heated campaign period, and NCIC Committee Vice-Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu, had implored politicians to avoid divisive politics that interfere with the country’s security.
Nyutu called on the politicians to sign the Political Decency & Peace Charter to rein their utterances.
