Messages of condolences continue to pour in following the death of Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki.

The EU Delegation eulogized President Kibaki as a true elder statesman who dedicated his life to public service

“With the passing of H.E. Hon. Emilio Mwai Kibaki, not just Kenya, but East Africa and the global community as a whole, have lost a true elder statesman who dedicated his life to public service. His achievements for Kenya since independence in many different roles – as President, Member of Parliament, and Leader of the Opposition- are innumerable,” read part of the statement.

They said many Europeans will remember him most as the flagbearer, and then implementer, of Kenya’s return to fully fledged multi-party democracy.

“For this achievement, he retains Europeans’ sincerest respect and admiration,” added the statement.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Board of Directors, Management and Members of the East African Business Council (EABC) have conveyed deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, citizens and the Government of the Republic of Kenya for the loss of the Former President and Former Member of the Summit of the EAC Heads of State.

“H.E. Mwai Kibaki duly served as the third president of the Government of the Republic of Kenya from 2002 to April 2013. H.E. Mwai Kibaki was a patriotic, intellectual economist and pan-African leader who championed the EAC regional integration agenda,” read a statement.

They said the former president spearheaded the signing of the EAC Customs Union Protocol on 2nd March 2004 and the involvement of the private sector as the engine for socio-economic growth in the EAC.

Kibaki also signed the EAC Common Market Protocol in 2009 enabling the free movement of Goods, Persons, Labour, Services, Capital plus Rights of Establishment and Residence for East Africans.

“His exemplary stewardship led to Kenya’s remarkable economic growth, infrastructure development and pioneered basic & affordable healthcare and free primary education,” they said.

“H.E. Mwai Kibaki remains strong in our hearts and it is our duty to follow his great vision of peace, unity and borderless East Africa for increased trade, investment, socio-economic growth and prosperity of our beloved East African Community. East African Business Council stands in solidarity with the people and Government of the Republic of Kenya during this difficult time,” added the statement.
