– Schurrle was instrumental in the German side which won the World Cup in 2014
– He announced his retirement on social media on Friday, July 17
– The announcement came days after parting ways with Dortmund despite having one year left on his contract
Former Chelsea midfielder Andre Schurrle has announced a shock retirement from football aged just 29.
The decision came barely days after his latest club Borussia Dortmund announced the termination of his contract , which was set to run for another year.
Following the decision to end ties with Dortmund, Schurrle was expected to look for a new club in the coming weeks.
But days on, the German, international, who has 57 caps for his national side, opted to quit the beautiful game altogether.
On why he decided to hang his boots, the former Chelsea man seemed to hint he had lost passion for the game as his career was on a steady decline.
“The decision matured in me for a long time” before saying that: “the depths became deeper and the highlights less and less” he told outlet Der Spiegel.
He went on to add that he “did not need applause anymore”.
Among his plausible destinations prior to his retirement announcement was China, Turkey and possibly the MLS.
The 29-year-old also issued a statement on Borussia Dortmund’s official website thanking fans and the club.
“Looking back, it’s been a time with a lot of ups and downs, and a valuable experience, both in the sporting sense but also privately. I’d like to thank the club’s bosses and wish the club and its special fans all the best for the future,” his statement read.
His retirement announcement is rather tragic as it comes barely six years after his instrumental performances helped Germany to a famous World Cup in Brazil.
Notably, Schurrle netted two goals in the semi-final as the German machine completely annihilated hosts Brazil 7-1.
He rose through the ranks in Germany, starting out at Mainz before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, which was a force to reckon with in the Bundesliga back then.
In 2013, he moved to Chelsea where he established himself enough to be snapped up by Germany’s manager Joachim Lowe.
He eventually left the Blues in 2015, joining Wolfsburg and after an impressive season, ended up joining Dortmund.
He went on to join Fulham on loan but he was part of the side which was relegated in the 2018/2019 season.
Arguably the biggest highlight of his career was the cross which set up Mario Gotze to score the winner in the World Cup final against Argentina in 2014.
The last club he played for was Spartak Moscow on loan from Dortmund but his 2019/20 season was plagued with injury.
