A Kajiado court on Thursday, 24th February, sentenced a former Moi Girls High School student to five years in prison after she was found guilty of manslaughter in a fire incident that killed 10 of her colleagues on September 2, 2017.
Justice Stella Mutuku passed the judgment virtually, mentioning that the sentence was given for each manslaughter charge, but she will be in jail for five years as they will run concurrently.
“I will not impose a non-custodial sentence because the offence of manslaughter is a serious one that requires one to serve a jail term,” said Mutuku.
The former student committed the crime when she was a minor, 14. She was assigned the two-floor Kabarnet Dormitory, where the fire occurred, killing 10 and injuring 50 others.

She was charged and found culpable in December 2021 when she was 18, but her conviction was set for a later date.
All these were taken into consideration by Justice Mutuku and delivered a sentence that has been termed lenient by the victims’ parents.
“We believed and trusted that the judge would hand the student, whom they described as a killer, a heavier penalty including a life jail term,” said one parent.
The former student, in his mitigation, had told the court that she is still remorseful as her actions caused loss of lives and left many families grieving.
“The student regrets her actions and seeks leniency from the court. I have also taken into account her mitigation, the statement from the deceased students’ families, and a pre-sentence report from the probation officer,” noted the judge.
