Former US President Barack Obama has tested positive for Covid-19.

Taking to his social media on Sunday, 13th March the 44th president of the United States said he’s experiencing a scratchy throat, “but feeling fine otherwise.”

“I just tested positive for Covid. I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple of days, but am feeling fine otherwise,” tweeted Obama.

He also announced that his wife, Michelle, had tested negative.

“Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted, and she has tested negative,” he said.

The 60-year-old said his infection is a reminder for those unvaccinated to get the chance.

“It’s a good reminder that, even as cases go down, you should get vaccinated and boosted, if you haven’t already, to help prevent more serious symptoms and giving COVID to others.”

The US national case total confirmed cases has surpassed 79.4 million according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The country’s death toll now stands at 965,000 as the nationwide hospitalisation rates continue to decline steadily.
