Form 3 student shot by police officer effecting curfew order

A 17-year-old boy from Marel area in Bungoma Town is receiving treatment at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital after he was, on Thursday night (July 9), allegedly shot by police officers effecting the dusk-to-dawn curfew.

Witnesses say the teenager went outside his parents’ house
after he heard commotions emanating from a nearby road.

“The boy had heard men, who were travelling in a tuktuk arguing.
When he went outside to see what was happening, he was shot in the upper part
of his thigh by one of the tuktuk occupants. We later learnt that the person
who fired the bullet was a police officer effecting the 9pm to 4am curfew,”
said a neighbour, who sought anonymity.

The victim, a Form Three student, thereafter called a Nyumba
Kumi Initiative elder, who rushed to the scene and took him to Bungoma County
Referral Hospital.

Bungoma South police boss, Wilson Nanga, defended the cops’
action, saying “they suspected the victim was a thug roaming around during
curfew hours, hence the shooting”.

Bungoma County Referral Hospital lead doctor says the
teenager is responding well to treatment.
