According to reports from England the World Cup winner was suffering from a long-term illness.
He is the older brother of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton and was one of the key players in the 1966 World Cup which remains the only one England has ever won to date.
At club level, he was loyalty personified as he played for Leeds United, making a record 773 appearances over a career that spanned 23 years.
The England football team also tweeted: “We are devastated by the news that Jack Charlton, a member of our World Cup-winning team of 1966, has passed away,”
Charlton helped his club Leeds to two promotions from the second division, and he also formed part of the side which won the league cup and FA in 1968 and 1972 respectively.
Despite naturally playing in defence, he is Leeds United’s ninth highest scorer in history with 96 goals.
