The former Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Amb.(Eng.) Mahboub Maalim has joins Kenyans and citizens of the Greater Horn of Africa to mourn the death of the late President Mwai Kibaki that occurred Friday.
He described the late President as a super statesman who strongly believed in regional peace, trade and integration.
Ambassador Mahboub fondly recalled how the late President first appointed him to serve as a permanent secretary for ten years before designating him as an envoy to serve as the executive secretary of the regional organization for another ten years.
The late President played a pivotal role in the region including the peace processes for Somalia and South Sudan as the chair of IGAD between 2006 and 2008.
He will also be remembered for the launch of the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor.
“People of the Igad region will forever be indebted to the late President Kibaki for the critical role he played and the contribution he made towards the stability and prosperity of region,” stated Amb. Mahboub Maalim in his message of condolences.
He is currently the Council Chair of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
