He also tried recapture the seat in 2007 but still lost to Were. He retired from politics and ventured into private business.

Burial arrangements for the late MP are underway.

The area MP Peter Nabulindo led the Residents in condoling with his Bashitsetse clan and the immediate family.

Several leaders took to social media to mourn the veteran politician including ODM leader Raila Odinga, who eulogized Wamukoya as a close friend who was committed to serve the country and people of Matungu Constituency.

“This was a very close friend who was deeply committed to our country and to his people of Matungu. He left an indelible mark as director of Veterinary Services in Kenya. My thoughts are with his family and the people of Matungu,” he said.

“Hon Dr Joseph Wamukoya was an industrious and development minded leader who served in the 8th Parliament as the first MP for Matungu Constituency. His death has robbed us a leader whose focus was on development, peace and uplifting the lives of mwananchi,” said Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
