Campaigns for Ganda ward seat in Malindi constituency, Kilifi county have intensified with the Orange Democratic Movement candidate facing a serious onslaught from an independent candidate fronted by area MP Aisha Jumwa.
Last week, Jumwa told Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and ODM to prepare for a defeat, saying Malindi people will no longer worship outsiders whose motive is to use and dump them eventually when they achieve their ultimate goal.
“This time round, Joho will cry in the toilet because of the political beating he will receive from this by-election. What makes him think he can come and cheat our people and get what he wants. I’m confident my people are with me,” said Jumwa amid thunderous applause from a crowd at the home of her candidate, Abdulrahaman Omar.
Jumwa said Joho was not a Coastal political kingpin as he would like people to believe, saying the Mombasa governor has not assisted Mijikenda and other Coast people to warrant him to claim the title.
She said Joho was only benefiting himself and family from SGR deals while other Coast people are languishing in poverty and lack of jobs.
Joho and ODM are fronting Reuben Katana in the by-election slated for October 17. Kilifi county ODM allied MPs Owen Baya of Kilifi North, Teddy Mwambire of Ganze and Kilifi women representative Gertrude Mbeyu have joined party MCAs to campaign for the ODM candidate.
The legislators have accused Jumwa of using propaganda to advance her political agenda in the area. They have told her to first get married before aspiring to become Mekatilili wa Menza- a heroine who led Giriama people in a rebellion against the British Colonial Administration between 1913-1914.
Jumwa has declared herself the Mekatilili wa Menza whenever she is faced with intense political wars. She says after winning the Ganda seat, the next will be to deal with Dabaso in Kilifi North where a by-election is looming.
In Dabaso, Jumwa wants to defeat Gideon Mung’aro, the CAS Lands and area MP Baya both whom come from the ward and are her competitors for the Kilifi county governorship 2022.
Meanwhile, Governor Joho has camped in a hotel in Malindi coordinating the Ganda ward campaigns. He has avoided venturing into the campaign trail without his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi as this was likely to mess up the ODM campaigns.
Sources close to the Mombasa county chief say that he is troubled after Governor Kingi who is close to Jumwa continues to dodge him on the campaign trail.
Kingi is faced with a dilemma of whether to disappoint his political ally Jumwa and campaign against her candidate or disappoint ODM and Joho. So far, he has decided keep off the campaigns, raising eyebrows as to what his calculations were. There are other reports that he is also secretly dealing with deputy president William Ruto to frustrate the ODM campaigns.
