Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga has set a new record in parliament after being unanimously elected to chair the lucrative finance and national planning committee of the National Assembly.
Wanga becomes the first woman to hold the powerful position since independence.
“A big win for women’s leadership as this is the first time in the history of the Kenyan Parliament that a woman chairs the Finance and National Planning Committee,” she said via her Twitter handle.
The vocal woman rep promised to give her best in the new docket and thanked the leadership of ODM and Jubilee Party for trusting her with the job and believing in women leadership.
“Deeply humbled on my election as the Chair of the Finance and Planning Committee this morning. Will endeavour to serve the Nation diligently in this new responsibility.
“I thank HE Uhuru Kenyatta for his magnanimity and my party leader Raila Odinga for his faith in me,” she added.
Wanga was proposed by ODM to chair the committee after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s purge landed on the then chairman Joseph Limo who was deemed to be an ally of Deputy President William Ruto.
She will be deputised by Roysambu MP Waihenya Ndirangu.
Other MPs who reaped from the purge include Muturi Kigano (Kangema) elected to chair Justice and Legal Affairs, Kanini Kega (Kieni) to chair Budget, and William Kamket of Tiaty to chair Delegated Legislation
