Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi is now focusing on his re-election and allowing his supporters to chose between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Though he inked an agreement to support Raila’s presidential bid with his Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) under Azimio la Umoja, the county boss appears to have retreated.

In recent days, the governor has been trying to woo both Ruto and Raila’s supporters in his county.

A few days ago, he clarified that though the former Prime Minister is his preferred presidential candidate, he won’t rally any of his backers behind him.

He told his supporters that they were at liberty to vote whomever they feel is the right choice for Kenya in the forthcoming presidential election.

“If Ruto wins, he will disburse funds to Kiraitu Murungi as governor, if Raila wins, he will give funds to Kiraitu, because I will be the governor, so, at the top select whomever you want. Whomever you choose it’s all right, as long as you choose Kiraitu as the governor,” he said.

Since joining Raila’s camp a month ago, the the county chief has had a rough time, prompting him to change strategy.

Not long ago he and his wife were humiliated during a church function.

The Meru First Lady asked how many people would re-elect her husband, but not even one raised their hands up.

Kiraitu admitted that the moment left him dispirited and embarrassed.

The governor will face off with Senator Mithika Linturi of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza, who is running as an independent candidate.
