Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua, nicknamed Jaguar, has announced that he will run as an independent candidate in the August elections to defend his seat.
Following the party’s hotly disputed nominations, his competitor, East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Simon Mbugua, was given the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the parliamentary seat.
On Friday, Jaguar took to social media to emphasise that, despite being passed over for the UDA ticket, he had undertaken consultative meetings with his constituents, who pushed him to defend his seat on whatever platform he chose.
“No one can plan for the people of Starehe. I had a meeting with residents of Central Ward and they have endorsed me. As an independent candidate, I will defend my seat based on the will of the people,” he said.
The UDA’s primaries in Starehe were cancelled last week due to “security concerns,” according to the party.
The party would, however, employ opinion surveys to decide on Mbugua’s candidacy, much to Jaguar’s chagrin.
He also claimed that his constituents were denied the ability to exercise their voting rights when the primaries were cancelled, and he vented his emotions on social media.
“The people of Starehe were denied their democratic right to vote in the nominations and elect their leader again. The party decided to conduct opinion polls to determine who should receive the nomination certificate, and that is what we did.”
In response, the legislator posted photographs from supposedly Infotrak surveys that showed him as the most popular candidate in Starehe, with a popularity rating of more than 30%.
Deputy President William Ruto had promised to nominate him as a lawmaker for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) where Mbugua has been serving in the last five years.
“The EALA post you were promising me should go to Mbugua’s wife because I’m defending my seat.”
