The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has suspended new voter registration for a period of one year beginning Wednesday, 4th May.

In a Gazette Notice, the Commission also suspended the change in registration of voters for a period of nine months with both exercises scheduled to resume on 13th March 2023.

According to the commission’s chair Wafula Chebukati, the suspension is set to allow for verification of biometric data and particulars of registered voters ahead of the 9th August polls.

“The commission notifies the pubic that this suspension is to enable availability of the register of voters to the public for purposes of verification of biometric data and particulars of registered voters in accordance with sections 6A of the Elections Act, 2011,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati said the suspension will apply to voters in Kenya and Kenyan citizens living outside the country.

He also said that the new Preliminary Register of Voters has been completed and is available for verification, an exercise which will start on 4th May to 2nd June 2022.

Chebukati noted that a person who duly applied to be registered and his/her name or the biometric data has not been captured correctly in the register of voters may make a claim to the Registration Officer within the period that has been given for verification.
