A former Bungoma county government minister Patrick Koi is among three individuals whose names have been forwarded to the government for appointment as managing director of Nzoia Sugar Company.
The company’s board of directors under the chairmanship of former Webuye MP Joash Wamangoli also forwarded to the Agriculture minister Mwangi Kiunjuri the names of former Nzioa Water Company MD Patrick Munialo and a human resource consultant Michael Makokha.
The current acting MD who fears for his life did not apply.
The position fell vacant after the then MD was attacked and eventually succumbed to death. It is suspected that the late had blocked a section of the board members in a scheme to swindle the firm millions of shillings while others linked the attack on a love triangle.
Koi was in-charge of Agriculture and Livestock docket during Governor Ken Lusaka’s reign and also served in Trade and Energy while Munialo worked for Nzowasco for 10 years.
The successful candidate would be taking over the financially crippled company from the late Mike Kulundu who was killed while in an acting position.
Geoffrey Wanyonyi who had been at the helm for several years left in 2016 after being arrested and charged with alleged corruption while in office. The case is still pending at Bungoma Law Court.
The new MD will be taking over at the time when the national government is in the process of privatising the company for failing to sustain itself among other five companies. According to sources at the privatisation commission, the process could be completed before the end of the next month.
And according to Wamangoli the parastatal owes contracted farmers Sh330 milliom for the crop deliveries this year and another estimated Sh150milion for its 900 employees in delayed salaries for the past 4months.
