Embu Sevens Rugby tournament is set to make a return on May 7 -8 at the Njukuri Showground, Embu County after a two-year hiatus due to Covid 19 pandemic.
According to Embu RFC chairman Moses Mukabane, twelve clubs have confirmed participation at the competition which was previously won by Oilers after beating cross-town rivals Nakuru 14-12 in the Cup final.
The Sevens tournament is a chance for Kenya Cup, Championship and Nationwide league sides to test themselves ahead of the National sevens circuit that kicks-off from May 21.
“We expect more teams to attend with the Sevens circuit around the corner. It will be good preparation for the clubs and will help in whipping them into a competitive state by the circuit starts,” said Mukabane.
Kenya Rugby Union Central region development officer Patrick Mwika says it’s a privilege to have Embu Sevens as a curtain raiser for the National Sevens Circuit.
The circuit will start on 21st May with George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial Sevens in Nairobi and Mwika believes Embu Sevens will help grow talent in the grassroots.
“We feel honoured to be given this tournament by KRU which will take place before the official start of the national sevens circuit, so with Embu being in Central we feel privileged hosting big teams like Oilers, KCB RFC and Mwamba,” said Mwika.
Among the teams expected are KCB, Menengai Oilers, Nakuru, British Army, Nondescripts, Mean Machine, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Catholic Monks, Mwamba and USIU Martials.
Blak Blad, Meru RFC, Kiambu RFC, Rongai Morans are also expected.
Mean Machine, who won the first edition in 2014, defended the title in the 2018 edition beating Kenya Harlequin 12-5 in the final while Samurai Select won in 2017.
