Billionaire Jimi Wanjigi has left some Kenyans doubting after explaining his journey to success.

Despite coming from a well-off family, Wanjigi claimed he started his first business without a single penny. His father, Maina Wanjigi, was a powerful minister in the Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Arap Moi’s administrations.

Speaking during his first-ever media interview on Citizen TV, the businessman said he started as a garbage collector in Nairobi.

”It’s important you understand my story a bit more. My first business was garbage collection. I pioneered garbage collection in this country, private garbage collection,” he said.

The 2022 presidential aspirant explained that it was not easy to start the business and had to move from one government office to the other to get permits.

“The laws stated that the garbage must be collected by the city once it is put in the receptacle. I got permission after a lot of lobbying to assist in complementary service. That I will provide plastic bags under a company called Bins Limited and those plastic bags I would not put in the receptacle, I needed permission to dump the garbage in Dandora. Let me tell you I started that business without a penny,” he said.

He added that a former classmate helped him get money to buy the first vehicle to transport the garbage from different parts of the city to Dandora.

Wanjigi also denied that he is a businessman who engages in shady deals and influencing government tenders.

He detailed that his businesses are legitimate and never deals directly with the government.

“I had no role in Anglo-leasing scandal, investigations are vindicating me. It is all fabrication,” he said.

Asked why he is always interested in who becomes President, Wanjigi said, “I want to make money. Businesses thrive when there is political stability.”
