Joy as doctors successfully separate conjoined twins in Italy

– The beautiful set of conjoined twins was separated in a groundbreaking surgery which took hours and a huge team of medics

– Unlike most twins, Ervina and Prefina were fused back-to-back which made it exceedingly tough as they shared delicate blood vessels

– Their mother, Ermine Nzotto, could not hide her excitement at having her daughters separated

Ervina and Prefina Bangalo, two beautiful baby girls who were born with their heads conjoined back-to-back have been successfully separated after a tough surgery.

A report by Medicalxpress.com, sighted by TUKO.co.ke, indicated separating twins who are fused at the back requires an exceedingly rare surgery for an equally rare congenital defect.

This made the surgery particularly challenging since the back of the head is a far more critical place for blood supply to the brain and drainage of blood away from it.

In the face of all the challenges the surgical procedure confronted them with, a team of 30 doctors and nurses at the Vatican’s pediatric hospital in Italy went through an 18-hour surgery and successfully separated the girls.

It was reported the toddlers were recovering well a month after their third and definitive separation surgery that took place on June 5.

The twins were born June 29, 2018, in Mbaiki, Central African Republic, with their rare disorder that reportedly occurs once in every two million births.

Their mother, Ermine Nzotto, could not hide her excitement when she was spoken to.

She said:

“It’s a joy, that I can see my girls run and play like other children. May they tomorrow study and learn to become doctors to save the other children of this world”.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported about a team of 78 medical doctors from Nigeria who successfully operated on and separated conjoined twin sisters.

The widely applauded surgery which lasted about 13 hours was carried out in November 2019.

The twin sisters, Mercy and Goodness Ede, were joined in the chest and abdomen.

The hospital’s spokesperson, Doctor Tayo Haastrup, said the surgery was the first of its kind at the public specialist centre.
