Bomet Women Representative Joyce Korir has expressed confidence in trouncing her competitors for the Bomet Central Member of Parliament’s ticket during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) primaries slated for April 14.

Korir who is facing off with six others banked on her 15 years’ development track record since she was elected as councilor in 2007.

Speaking during her campaign tour of Morit and Balek areas of Bomet Central, Korir said as the Mayor of Bomet, she was able to reclaim public land from private developers including the parcel where Bomet University College sits on.

“St. Michael’s primary school land had been converted into a grazing field by some individuals but I fought them out and had to face the backlash including being called names and attempts of being ousted from office made,” she said.

“But as a leader, I had to stand my ground and that is why today we pride ourselves with one of the biggest learning institutions in South Rift that is currently home to about 3000 students,” Korir noted.

She said under her watch, Bomet town saw its first 10-kilometer tarmac, street lights and Sh50 million market and terminus projects which greatly improved business in the town.

While raising concerns over rising cost of living that she said have caused havoc in the poverty stricken population, Korir said she prioritized youth empowerment through provision of employment.

“As a Women Representative, I was able to install tailoring equipment worth Sh10 million at a Silibwet facility which is able to make over 500 school uniforms a day,” she said.

“Due to insufficient funds, we hired a hall for the same but if elected, I will facilitate the purchase of land and building of a facility which will employ more than 500 youths including those involved in carpentry trade,” she pledged.

At the same time, Korir took issue with some of her opponents who she said were using unscrupulous votes’ seeking through inciting youths to disrupt her political meetings.
