A section of Jubilee Party supporters in Embu have protested over the issuance of direct nomination certificates to selected candidates in the area.

Tens of protesters held peaceful demonstrations within Makima Trading Center on Tuesday afternoon opposing the move, saying it was an infringement of their democratic right to nominate candidates of their choice.

Former Gachoka MP Mutava Musyimi was yesterday handed direct ticket in Nairobi to vie for area MP seat alongside several Ward Rep aspirants after opinion polls indicated that they were the most popular.

While registering their displeasure, the protestors threatened to disassociate with the ruling party if they are not given universal suffrage to allow them subject all candidates to party primaries in a bid to pick competent flag bearers ahead of the August polls.

“All we want is fairness and if there will be no nominations in Mbeere South, then we will just assume there is no Jubilee Party here,” one of the protestors Mutani Munguti cried out.

They continued that they will not allow leaders to be imposed on them and threatened to block them from campaigning as well as reject them on the ballot.

They reached out to the party leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta to weigh in on the matter to ensure internal party democracy was not hindered to avoid fallout.

“If the party wants to maintain strength in this area, then it must allow the voters to have the final say with regard to the leadership they desire,” said Moses Musila.
