Patron of the Kikuyu Council of Elders Prof. Peter Kagwanja has criticized the recent move by the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to join deputy president William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.

Addressing the media in Murang’a town, Prof. Kagwanja said Muturi who is also the Democratic Party leader should have remained neutral, without joining any of the political formations.

The patron, who has previously organized for coronation of the national parliament speaker, expressed his disappointment with Muturi’s move saying the council had a lot of faith in him.

“The council picked Muturi because we felt he was the best suited leader from this region to be our spokesman but he has let us down,” he remarked.

He observed that the coronation had now been rendered meaningless, because President Uhuru Kenyatta still remains the central region kingpin and he is the one to give political direction which the community shall follow.

Kagwanja contends that Muturi stood a good chance to become President Uhuru Kenyatta’s successor in the region but he has lost it.

“Muturi had a great chance of becoming the next Mt Kenya regional kingpin, but his move to join the deputy president has made him lose that opportunity,” he said.

“Although he would not have won this year’s general elections, he would have been nurtured to become presidential material by 2027 or even 2032”, Kagwanja added.

Kagwanja who is also a political analyst said those leaders joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance are ill advised and are risking their political careers pointing out that the outfit might not last long.

“Leaders are rushing to the alliance because they think it is the winning side, but they have gotten it wrong. A real shocker is coming,” he said.

“Any wise person should be able to observe where the country is headed to and be able to strategize before making their next move,” Kagwanja added.

He stated that after the political party nominations when the candidates are finally lined up, the government will support those in the Jubilee party and ensure they take the seats in the August 9 polls.

“The real game is yet to begin and once we hit the ground running, we shall discredit UDA and their affiliates, rendering them irrelevant in the region,” said Kagwanja.
