The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) will host a live telecast of an hour-long debate between five aspirants running for the August 9th, 2022 Machakos Gubernatorial race.
The five hopefuls include United Democratic Alliance’s Johnson Muthama, Wavinya Ndeti (Wiper Democratic Movement), Nzioka Waita of Chama Cha Uzalendo, Maendeleo Chap Chap’s Francis Maliti, and Rose Mulwa of the Empowerment & Liberation Party.
KBC Channel One TV host Victor Oloo will moderate the debate that will take place at Scott Christian University from 9.50pm.
The candidates will engage an audience that will be present both at the location comprising of professionals, and leaders drawn from Business, Women, and Youth groups, as well as those watching from home, as they make a case for their individual candidatures.
Kenyans across the country may also access a Livestream of the debate online by visiting the KBC website (www.kbc.co.ke) or through its social media channels including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
The debate comes at a time the Pollsters have hinted at a possible three-horse race pitting Ndeti, Muthama, and Waita.
Unlike the other two counties in the Ukambani region, Machakos appears interesting and unpredictable with the electorate previously unable to back the dominant political party in the region – Wiper.
In 2013 and 2017 general elections, outgoing Governor Alfred Mutua was elected on a Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) party ticket defeating the likes of Ndeti who had the backing of the Wiper Party led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Machakos will be the first of many gubernatorial debates to be televised by the national broadcaster in an effort to expose the electorate to those offering themselves for the position of County Chief Executive Officer and help them make an informed decision on the day of the election.
