World Meteorological Day takes place every year on 23 March and commemorates the coming into force on 23 March 1950 of the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization.
The day showcases the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to the safety and wellbeing of society and is celebrated with activities around the world.
As Kenya joins the rest of the world in marking the World Meteorological Day, Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo says the government recognises the challenges of climate change with regard to water availability.
Adding that it as been working to integrate climate information into government policies.
In his message the PS noted that the effect of climate change is already altering the amount, distribution, timing, and quality of available water.
He said that the theme for this year’s WMD – “Climate and Water”- is relevant to Kenya considering that water is one of most important commodities that support most social and economic activities.
The themes chosen for World Meteorological Day reflect topical weather, climate or water-related issues.
In her message, the Director of Kenya Meteorological Services Stella Aura called for cooperation of all stakeholders in order to mitigate challenges posed by the effects of Climate Change.
