President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the Nairobi Expressway will be opened for public use on Saturday, 14th May.
Speaking on Sunday, 8th May during the Nairobi City Marathon, President Kenyatta said the expressway will be open for trial.
He said the exercise will allow the government to identify sections that need to be polished up before its official launch.
“This week on Saturday, we shall open, not officially, on a trial basis. We will allow Kenyans to use the expressway so that we see the loopholes that exist before we officially launch it,” he said.
The Head of State pointed out that the opening of the Highway will reduce the rampant traffic jam that is often witnessed on the roads.
The nearly completed expressway is expected to cut travel time from the south to west of Nairobi to about 20 minutes from two hours.
Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway will be required to move at a speed of 80km/h once opened.
The 27-kilometre expressway that stretches from Mlolongo through Uhuru Highway to the James Gichuru Road junction in Westlands will be operated by Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) which designed, financed and constructed the road.
Motorists who intend to use the Nairobi Expressway will be required to register with the company that will run it.
