The rate of increase of basic goods and services in Kenya was reported at 6.1 percent in 2021, a rise from the 5.4 percent rate reported in 2020, the year which was adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This becomes the highest rate since 2017 when the rate stood at 8 percent against the benchmark rate of 10 percent.

The current Central Bank of Kenya benchmark rate stands at 7 percent.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics attributes the rise to an increase in food prices especially oily and fats and ready-made food whose inflation rose by 25.6 percent and 23.4 percent respectively.

Fish, vegetables, and fruits rose by 12.5 percent.

In 2021, Transport Index recorded the highest inflation rate of 12.3 percent on account of the increased prices of petrol and diesel.
