Thousands of Kenyans gathered at Parliament Buildings to pay their last respects to President Mwai Kibaki, including politician Mary WambuI.

The former Othaya lawmaker was photographed at comforting Kibaki’s son Jimmy, dressed in a black skirt suit.

Wamboi was rumoured to be Kibaki’s second wife for a long time.

That is, until the former president held a news conference and declared to the world that he only had one wife, Lucy.

The enraged First Lady, now deceased, accompanied Kibaki to the press conference.

In March 2009, Kibaki stated, “I want to make it very clear that I have only one beloved wife, Lucy, who is here, and I have no other.”

“After hearing some statement, I’ve gone into this pretty terrible mood… I’d like to state unequivocally that anyone who persists in following that path will face me in court. And we’re going to deal with him, no other way,” he said, referring to a politician who mentioned a second wife.

Wambui has been silent about her relationship with Kibaki.

Even after Kibaki’s clarification, the public was not convinced, with many believing Wambui and Kibaki’s connection was more than just normal.

During Kibaki’s presidency, Wambui wielded influence in official circles.

During his death, Wambui would later eulogise Lucy as a personal friend.
