The mention of Deputy President William Ruto at the State Burial of retired President Mwai Kibaki nearly turned the event into one of those charged political rallies.

Immediately the DP was called to make his speech, mourners lost their minds and started to cheer at the top of their voices.

Those who were in control of the sound system – of course, the military and State House – killed the sound perhaps because it was too noisy.

However, supporters of the DP claimed that the sound was distorted for political reasons.

In his sermon, Nyeri Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria had cautioned the politicians against using the funeral to advance their agenda.

However, Dr Ruto, in his speech, could not resist marketing his presidential bid.

He likened his bottom-up economic model to the approach Kibaki used to initiate development projects.

“If there is a demonstration of bottom-up, we can learn from Mwai Kibaki. Inspired by Kibaki, we must the doors of opportunities for many more children in Kenya,” he said.

He also indirectly attacked President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Mwai Kibaki did not ignore the ordinary Kenyans,” Ruto said.
