ODM leader Raila Odinga’s security was stopped at the entrance to Nyayo Stadium’s VIP zone, causing a stir.

Members of the Presidential Escort and the military, stationed outside barred him from accompanying his employer to the VIP area at the stadium.

He was shoved and told to go back.

One of the cops was heard telling Raila’s bodyguard, “There is nowhere you are going, he is extremely safe in there,” in a short video that went popular on social media.

Raila and his wife Ida came at the stadium and were greeted by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Amb Macharia Kamau, who escorted them in, completely unaware to the brewing drama.

At the Nyayo National Stadium, the former Prime Minister was among the dignitaries that attended Kibaki’s State Funeral.

Kibaki’s remains was brought in a military procession from Lee Funeral Home to State House before being escorted to the stadium, which was six kilometres distant.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was joined by three visiting Heads of State and other foreign dignitaries in paying their respects to Kibaki, who served as Kenya’s third president during two terms from 2002 to 2013.

Kibaki was elected in 2002 after pledging to fight corruption.

However, his ten years in leadership were tainted by scandals and the worst political violence Kenya has seen since independence.

His contested re-election in late 2007 sparked unrest between the Kikuyu and Kalenjin, two of the country’s main ethnic groups. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and over 1,000 people were killed.

Kenya, on the other hand, saw tremendous economic growth during his leadership, thanks in part to his Vision 2030 programme, which was adopted by the current regime and enabled the implementation of large infrastructure projects as well as health and education reforms.

The retired Head of State will be laid to rest at his Othaya home tomorrow.
