Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has announced that he will run for the Homa Bay governorship as an independent candidate.
His declaration comes after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) gave a direct ticket to Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, 3rd April, Kidero assured his supporters that he would be on the ballot in the August 9 General Election.
“In response to your cries for better governance and restoration of your sovereign jurisdiction, I will offer myself as an independent candidate for the position of Homa Bay County Governor,” Kidero said.
“I am overwhelmed by your unconditional support. I will be on the ballot on August 9th, 2022. Take my word – I will not let you down!”
ODM on Thursday, 31st March, endorsed Wanga to fly the party’s flag in the gubernatorial race.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting, ODM leader Raila Odinga revealed that all the seven aspirants who were also seeking the party ticket had dropped their bids in support of Wanga.
He also said that the seven aspirants had picked Oyugi Magwanga as Wanga’s running mate.
“They’ve all agreed to step down and back Gladys Wanga as the party candidate in the Homa Bay gubernatorial race. In the same spirit, they’ve also nominated her running mate as Oyugi Magwanga,” said the ODM leader.
The seven other aspirants are ODM national chair John Mbadi, Jared Kiasa, former County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe, former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga, Louis Ogingo, Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori and Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata.
