Former Police spokesperson Charles Owino has abandoned the Siaya governorship where he was the running mate of ex-Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo.
According to reports, Owino has been offered a new job by the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai. He quit the police serve mid-last year to run for gubernatorial seat.
He will lead the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons as Director.
Mutyambai gave Owino seven days to accept or reject his new position.
Before going into politics, Owino was the deputy director of the Small Arms and Light Weapons Agency.
The former police spokesperson left the force to run for governor of Siaya on an ODM ticket, but was unable to gain support from the party’s leadership, causing him to leave the party in March 2022.
He teamed up with Gumbo and joined the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
He withdrew his governorship ambition later that month and agreed to deputize former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo.
The IEBC has given UDM 24 hours to choose a new running mate for Gumbo.
