Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) are protesting the re-registration of SIM Cards.
The online protests have been increasing even as the deadline approaches.
A new warning by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) that those that fail to register their details by 15th April 2022, would be jailed or fined Sh300,000 irked KoT more.
Many condemned CA CEO Ezra Chiloba for being ‘in charge of a process that seeks to onboard Kenyans into illegality where pictures and other details are recorded’.
The government through the KICA Act requires proper SIM card registrations. There’s no part of the KICA that asks the telecommunication firm, Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom to collect pictures of their clients.
A Kenyan, Mr Eliud Karanja Matindi, has already moved to court to protest the inclusion of photos and re-registration of those whose details are correct in the system.
According to the activist, the directive from the CA is unconstitutional and, therefore, null and void and any collection, processing, and retention of photographs by mobile telephone service operators are unconstitutional.
“The Directive from the 1st Respondent for the 1st and 2nd Respondents and the Interested Party to carry out fresh registration of their existing and already registered mobile telephone service subscribers are unconstitutional and, therefore, null and void,” he said in an affidavit.
Below are some thoughts from KoT
Hey @Safaricom_Care is there an online platform to update my SIM card information? It’s 2022, nobody leaves the house anymore.
Who comes up with this laws? What if you’re not in the country or in a hospital bed recovering? Why does our government love threatening citizens while stealing and wasting our taxes? Kenyans were murdered by police for not wearing masks. Next, sim card murders? @ezraCHILOBApic.twitter.com/dnMs5WGeqW

Kuna Mkenya hana Huduma Namba, hakudungwa vaccine, huwa anapost picha kwa social media akivuta bangi, halafu Ezra Chiloba anadhani atamtishia aende akaregister kasim card.
Dear Chiloba, The only threats Kenyans take seriously are 2. Battery low & data is below 2MB. We Kenyans urinate in places written usikojoe hapa. Enter toilets written STAFF ONLY. Pull doors written PUSH. Enter gates written MBWA kali. Take selfies in areas written NO photography
Chiloba was Appointment Head of Communication Authority And he has directed Safaricom to Collect Biodata of Everyone,What he intents to do with the Data can only be speculated
Why is CAK @CA_Kenya‘s Ezra Chiloba threatening to fine Kenyans who would have not updated their lines upto ksh 300,000 @Safaricom_Care ,@AIRTEL_KE@TelkomCare_Ke why can’t you offer civic education to Kenyans and elaborate on the importance of the so called simcard Updates?
