Kenya Pipeline Company has begun repair works on the Sinendet-Kisumu oil pipeline after oil spillage was reported at the Kanyamedha section in Kisumu County.

KPC Managing Director Dr. Macharia Irungu has said the spillage was detected at 12.30am on Friday according to a statement released by the company.

Dr. Irungu added that KPC Emergency Response Team was immediately dispatched to the leaky section to contain and recover hydrocarbons by reticulation of the product back to pump station 28 in Kisumu to prevent it from spreading further.

“We urge the residents who are near the leak site to immediately keep off the area to enable KPC undertake the repairs to minimize danger,” said Dr. Irungu.

While the amount of leakage is yet to be established, Dr. Irungu says the incident has not affected petroleum products availability both in the country and region.

KPC has assured it currently has sufficient stocks for all the grades across the depots countrywide.
