– Lionel Messi has enjoyed a sensational La Liga despite Barcelona losing the title to Madrid

– The Argentine striker finished the season as La Liga top scorer with 25 goals

– He beat Karim Benzema to the award having set the assists record in the Spanish league

– The 33-year-old also broke La Liga’s assist record to overtake former teammate Xavi

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi may have missed the chance to win the La Liga title for the third consecutive time this season, but once again evidenced why he is the finest footballer of his generation.

The 33-year-old inspired the Catalans to a 5-0 victory in their last game of the campaign, scoring twice and assisting one of the goals that helped them finish second behind Real Madrid.

Going into the match, Messi was on 20 assists – the record Xavi Hernandez set before leaving the club a few years back.

However, after assisting Ansu Fati’s first goal in the fixture, he overtook his former captain to achieve a new feat in his career.

He has now become the first player to create 21 assists in a single season – the most in a single campaign in La Liga history.

Apart from Messi and Fati, Luis Suarez and Nelson Semedo were also on target for the visitors in an inconsequential game as they have relinquished the title to Real Madrid before the match.

The Argentine also finished the season as the top scorer with 25 goals in 33 topflight appearances and was crowned highest goals scorer beating Karim Benzema with 21 goals to the award.

Having lost the title to Madrid, Messi had unkind words for Barcelona’s hierarchy.

We didn’t want to end the season like this but it represents how the season has gone,” he said.

“We were a very erratic, very weak, low-intensity team. We have to be self-critical,” he added.
