Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate, Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua, attended a church service in Narok County this morning, 22nd May.

“Together with @RailaOdinga we attended KIG Church in Entasekera, Loita, in Narok County this morning accompanied by @mamangilu @Peter_Kenneth. Wishing you all a blessed Sunday,” Karua wrote on her social media pages.

This appears to be a direct reaction to critics in Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

On Friday, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua sensationally claimed that the former Gichugu MP is an non-believer.

He went on to urge Kenyans to reject the Azimio ticket, noting that Kenya needs God-fearing leaders.

“Will you allow an atheist to be in the leadership of this country?” he posed during a political rally attended by the DP in Machakos.

However, Atheists in Kenya (AIK) came to the defence of Karua, saying she has never registered as their member.

“Every person has the right to manifest any religion through worship, practice, teaching or observance, including observance of the day of worship,” AIK leader Harrison Mumia said.

Mumia also denounced Mutua for trying to stigmatise atheists yet the Constitution is clear that “there shall be no State religion”.

According to Ruto’s allies and supporters, Karua has never been seen engaging in religious activities.

However, this claim is pure propaganda.

Though the Azimio deputy presidential candidate has rarely been photographed in church, there are a few times when she has been filmed in religious functions, the most recent being a day after the burial of former President Mwai Kibaki.
