Just days after University of Nairobi council declined to renew his contract, VC Peter Mbithi has found himself deserted as academicians scheme to take leadership of the university.
Among those angling to replace Prof Peter Mbithi include Bernard Njoroge, Stephen Kiama, Julius Ogeng’o and Isaac Mbeche.
The university council rejected request by Mbithi to serve for a second term but he is free to reapply. Sources say when the news was broken to him through a confidential letter from his secretary, Mbithi who was in Mombasa attending UNISA conference immediately flew back to Nairobi. The VC having used millions of shillings to compromise the council was confident his tenure was to be renewed but to his surprise, the letter instructed him to go on compulsory leave from July 6 as modalities to have a new VC were being worked on.
Mbithi after reading the letter is said to have sweated profusely and locked himself for hours in the toilet.
Also said to have openly wept are staff in his office and the security team. A cartel in the finance and procurement departments was all in low spirits.

Prof Mbithi

The VC’s allies advised him to move to court but the decision was shelved. It was then decided that although allowed to reapply, Mbithi should not do so as the council and government was against him.
Sources say that while asking for renewal of the contract, Mbithi had planted paraphernalia in his office to influence the outcome. It is like the black magic did not work.
Isolated and lonely, last week Mbithi was spotted drunk and disorderly. Sources say that he is now lobbying to be appointed an ambassador.
According to the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment) Act, 2018, vice-chancellors and deputy vice chancellors in public universities are to be recruited by the Public Service Commission.
Top in the race to replace Mbithi is his rival Njoroge.
Before falling out with Mbithi, Njoroge had been appointed DVC Administration and Finance.
Kiama the acting deputy vice-chancellor in charge of Human Resource and Administration is also a frontrunner for the seat.
Ogeng’o, acting deputy vice-chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs is another frontrunner for the seat.
Mbeche, deputy vice-chancellor, Student Affairs, is also eyeing the seat.
