Residents of Bungoma county and its environs have every reason to smile after the County government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries handed over the long stalled Chwele Chicken Slaughterhouse to an investor, Shifa Limited, for proper execution.

According to Agriculture CS Chirasha Makanda, the residents
will not only rear the birds as Mboga a term commonly used to refer to
chicken as food in western parts of Kenya but also as a source of income.

Makanda says the county government will invest more in the
facility in order to make sure they set up a testing labaratory and do more
renovations at the factory to a tune of about ksh6 million.

He says the chicken meat will be sold to neighbouring
counties and countries as well; “This is a good opportunity for our chicken
farmers to sell their products locally and internationally.”

The project that was set up in 2016 during the regime of the
first governor Kenneth Lusaka at a tune of 40 million was expected to employ close
to 700 people.

Abdi Abdi the CEO of Shifa Chicks Limited said that the
company will be able to slaughter and process at least 4000 chicken at its
capacity.

Abdi called on women and youth groups to rear chicken saying
the company will partner with financial institutions to give grants to farmers
for more productivity.
