Following the death on Friday, 16th July, of fugitive policewoman Caroline Kangogo, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered to adopt her children.
The country woke up to sensational reports that Corporal Kangogo, who had been on the run for a fortnight since the shooting to death of two men closely associated with her, had sneaked into her parents’ home in Elgeyo-Marakwet County and committed suicide.
The body of the suspected killer cop, who had been trailed by fellow officers since the killings, was found in a bathroom, together with the suspected killer weapon.
Sonko took to his social media platforms to condole with her family and said he was willing to look after Caroline’s kids. He said that though he did not condone the crimes Caroline is alleged to have committed, “people should be aware that depression exists and anyone can fall victim”.
“My innocent request to her family in Elgeyo-Marakwet kama mutalemewa kusomesha au kulea watoto wake (if you will be unable to care for or educate the children), please give them to me nikae nao na nitawasomesha na kuwalea (I’ll live with them, educate and bring them up). Children are a blessing from God,” Sonko wrote.
In phone text messages allegedly left behind by Caroline as suicide notes, she accused her estranged husband of being a womaniser, who “managed to poison my relationship with my father”.
She also allegedly apologised for killing her boyfriend, Constable John Ogweno, but wasn’t sorry about the other victim, Peter Ndwiga’s death, accusing him of stealing Ksh1.5 million from her. This included Ksh300,000 of her father’s pension that she had borrowed from the retired senior policeman.
