Modern Coast bus bursts into flames along Chavakali – Kapsabet road

Modern Coast coach of registration number KCU 154L caught fire Monday evening at Bendera trading centre along Chavakali – Kapsabet road, while trying to evade two cars that were involved in an accident.

According to a statement from the management, one of the rear tyres caught fire as a result of friction at the wheel level as the bus tried to get out of a narrow road with potholes.

The bus was headed to Mombasa from Mumias when the incident happened.

All passengers escaped unhurt.

The bus had 20kg dry powder fire extinguisher which is suitable for fighting burning solids and liquids, however the crew could not manage to put out the huge flame that was triggered by petrol spill from one of the cars.

The management says a standby bus was sent from Kakamega to take the passengers and they are on the way to Mombasa.
