Moyale Member of Parliament Qalicha Gufu has said he is the game changer of area politics ahead of the upcoming elections set for August 8.
Gufu who believes Moyale is transformed under his leadership in several spheres attributes the progress to puplic participation of the projects initiated by his office.
“Before carrying out any development project we consult widely with our constituents to get to know what they want, and this move has spurred rapid growth because all the initiatives we have done have been in the best interest of people.
“When I was elected, our bursary allocation was Kshs 2,000 per person but we have since improved that to 10,000 per head.Dams have been constructed all over and that has gone well with our livestock keepers. Every learning institution has got a borehole to help address water scarcity crisis” noted Qalicha
The first term lawmaker from Northern Kenya has in recent past demanded state intervention to end skirmishes in Moyale sub-county over clan conflict linked to political differences among local politicians.
He has maintained that a multi-agency team should be deployed in the region in dealing with the spate of insecurity that has resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property.
“I really want calm, peace and stability for my constituents and our people especially the pastoralists want to take care of their livestock without unnecessary disturbance and harassment.
“We urge the security team to bring to book the perpetrators, financiers, schemers and executors of these savage acts of violence,” he further stated
The business community in the border town of Moyale of Marsabit County has oftenly decried increased cases of robbery and attacks on traders that has hit the town in the past.
According to statistics by the local national chamber of commerce and industry (KNCCI),the incidents have left the business community a worried lot and asked the government for speedy intervention.
Qalicha is expected use United Democratic Movement (UDM) associated with Mandera Governor Ali Roba for his re-election at the forthcoming polls.
He has exuded confidence that UDM will be a game-changer politically and economically and will propel the region to the political negotiation table besides championing the interests of the community and ensure their voices are heard.
After lean economic times caused by ethnic clashes in the early 2000s, coupled with banditry and frequent cycles of drought, Moyale town has readied itself for better times.
Popularly known as Moyale Raha to mean a hub of leisure, the town that borders Ethiopia is currently basking in stable security and robust trade after operationalization of One Stop Border Point (OSBP) that is aimed at facilitating trade and free movement of goods in the region.
