The search for Kenya’s next Chief Justice recently came to an end after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) settled on Lady Justice Martha Koomw to succeed retired CJ David Maraga.
Her nomination elicited mixed reactions with a section of Kenyans congratulating her, while others saw the nomination as an extended effort in attaining a gender balance in the country’s institutions.
Among them is Law Society of Kenya’s Nelson Havi who argued that Koome is supported by the system to compromise the judiciary.
A section on MPs have also dismissed the nomination, threatening to reject Koome’s nomination.
Lugari MP Ayub Savula argued that it is not acceptable to have all the arms of government led by people from the same region.
5 other MPs and 3 senators told a local publication that they will raise the same issue nomination once she appears before the committee.
Koome’s name was fronted to president Kenyatta by the JSC and in turn, the president forwarded her name to parliament for vetting.
