Murang’a family appeals for help to raise Ksh3.5 million for kidney transplant

A family from Kandara in Murang’a is appealing to well-wishers to help raise money for their kin to undergo a kidney transplant.

Charles Ndegwa, 50, has been struggling with kidney failure
for the past nine years and he is seeking help to have his condition treated.

Ndegwa said his family has exhausted all the resources on
dialysis which he gets done twice or thrice a week.

Occasionally he also has blood transfusion done and this
cost him about Sh20, 000.

“Sometimes I have to go for dialysis three a week and in most cases I have to seek the services from a private hospital,” he said.

His brother has offered to donate one kidney to him but
despite this reprieve, the family is not in a capacity to raise Sh3. 5 million
required for the procedure.

“We have taken all the medical tests necessary and my
brother was found to be a suitable donor but we have no funds for the
operation” he lamented.

Mburu said his condition has taken a toll on his family and
they largely depend on well-wishers for their survival.

He also appealed to the government to consider reviewing the charges for kidney failure patients saying they are too high for the common person to afford.

“The government should also increase the renal units in
government hospitals to help more people access the services at a lesser
cost” he added.

His wife Joyce Njoki said she is unable to go look for
casual jobs as the husband requires more attention due to his condition.

“Kidney failure has caused a lot of complications in his body making him very frail,” she said.

She said she has only one cow left in the homestead after
selling all livestock to cater for his medical expenses.
